Saplo Malthouse

The Saplo malthouse in Pomezia was built in 1964 with “Wanderhaufen” technology (12 maceration tanks, 4 germination systems and 2 dryers) and a capacity of 14,000 tons/year. In 1972 the plant was expanded with the construction of another 2 maceration tanks, 2 germination systems, and 1 dryer. Total capacity increased to 26,000 tons/year.
In 2009 the germination technology was further improved by upgrading to the “Saladin” system, with a further increase in production up to 38,500 tons/year. Since 2018, thanks to the complete overhaul of the maceration department, the production capacity has reached over 44,000 tons/year.
All the improvements in terms of technology and innovation have been made in order to increase production capacity and malt quality, as well as improving the work environment in terms of health and safety.

Since 2010, the malthouse has been in operation every day for Peroni, the only Italian beer made 100% with Italian malt. Since 1983, SAPLO has been managing, in collaboration with the University of Perugia, the evaluation of new varieties of beer barley proposed by our main growers.
This experimentation evaluates all the technical characteristics, the quality and the productivity that are best adapted to the environmental conditions of the area. Saplo produces and sells barley seed directly to more than 1500 farmers in the supply chain, and also provides technical assistance to ensure proper cultivation.
